The G-d of Shem

Genesis 9:26, 27

Genesis 9:26, 27, “And he said, ‘Blessed is HASHEM the G-d of Shem; and let Canaan be a slave to them. ‘May G-d extend Japheth, but he will dwell in the tents of Shem; may Canaan be a slave to them.”

Many Christians become confused by what appears to be subsequent references to G-d in one verse. In the case above they imagine there to be two deities mentioned. There are two different Hebrew words used in this verse to reference G-d, one being the four letter name and Elokim being the other name.

This verse identifies HASHEM by name and then proceeds to give the relation He has to Shem by title. The language used is not much different than saying, "Joe, the president of America." This passage is affirming HASHEM as the G-d of Shem.
